After two days of enduring the craziest wind I have ever experienced, it finally calmed down enough for outdoor activities again. Originally, we planned to have 2 days in Big Bend, but relentless dust storms forced us inside for a day, making it unbearable to be outside.
With the weather finally on our side, we were eager to make the most of our one full day in this stunning park. From scenic drives to exhilarating hikes, this itinerary covers the best of Big Bend and promises an unforgettable experience.
Our journey began at a charming Hipcamp called the Goat Pens at Cigar Springs Ranch, near the ghost town of Terlingua.
Here’s how we spent an incredible day exploring the underrated Big Bend national park.
Morning: Discovering the Ghost Town and Hiking the Window Trail
Our day started at the Goat Pens at Cigar Springs Ranch, a cozy Hipcamp near the quirky ghost town of Terlingua. This former mining town is now home to a unique gift shop where I picked up a beautiful Big Bend poster as a souvenir.
From there, we drove into Big Bend National Park, ready for our first adventure: the Window Trail. Found on AllTrails, this 3.6-mile hike takes you into a canyon with a spectacular window view overlooking the vast desert.
The trail is moderately challenging, so make sure to bring plenty of water and come prepared for the elements of the desert and possible extreme heat. We experienced a light rain during our hike, which brought the desert flowers to life—a truly magical sight!
Afternoon: Scenic Drives and Epic Views in Big Bend
After completing the Window Trail, we headed back to our van and embarked on the Ross Maxwell Scenic Loop. This drive offers epic views of mountain ranges and overlooks the Rio Grande River. We paused at the Sotol Vista Overlook to enjoy a meal while taking in the breathtaking scenery.
Next, we visited the Panther Junction Visitor Center, where we explored exhibits featuring old wagons from the 1800s. This stop provided a fascinating glimpse into the park's history and the lives of the early settlers.
Late Afternoon: Capturing the Beauty of the Rio Grande
Continuing our journey, we drove down to the Rio Grande, where we captured stunning photos of the mirrored river and canyon wall views. The opposite side of the river is Mexico, adding an international flair to our adventure.
To complete our loop, we took the dirt road called Maverick Road. While it was a bit bumpy, a 4WD vehicle isn't necessary. The road offered new views of the Rattlesnake Mountain and saved us from backtracking. This detour was worth it for the fresh perspectives and beautiful scenery.
Evening: Stargazing and Wildlife Encounters at Big Bend
As the sun set, we returned to the Goat Pens and enjoyed the certified stargazing park. The clear skies of Big Bend are perfect for stargazing, although we did retreat to our van after hearing some strange animal noises.
During our stay, we were lucky to spot wild mules, pronghorn, and desert bighorn sheep. One particularly thrilling moment was when a herd of bighorn sheep almost collided with a motorcycle—a heart-pounding experience!
Conclusion: A Day to Remember
My day in Big Bend National Park was filled with awe-inspiring landscapes, thrilling wildlife encounters, and unforgettable adventures. Next time, I hope to hike the Hot Springs Trail and explore even more of this underrated gem.
